Disk Backup
Disk Backup is backup which is
performed to a disk-based storage medium
rather than a tape-based storage medium.
While tape is a rapid method for archiving
data, it is serial technology. In order to
restore data saved to tape, you have to find
the proper tape, load it and catalogue it
before you’re able to find the proper file,
folder or data volume you wish to restore.
This can take hours, even days, to complete.
Disk-based backup, however, can allow you to
restore systems and data in as little as 15
minutes. This is because disk-based storage
is a much faster method for restoring
systems and data. It is also far more
durable than tape, far easier to manage and
far more reliable. What good is a backup if
you cannot restore the data on it?
One way to get the benefit of disk-based
backup while meeting data retention
policies which may require a tape
archiving system is to add disaster
recovery software. Disaster recovery
software can be a bridge between the two and
enable you to have access to your
business-critical information on a moment’s
notice without having the hassle of dealing
with your tape archive.
